More Room for Us
Two weeks back at work full-time.
And honestly, my emotions and anxiety have been all over the place.
The past month has been a lot of questioning, processing, and trying to understand what I actually want. I’ve found myself thinking about my kids constantly and wondering what it would feel like to have more of my everyday life with them.
And as I’ve gotten closer to a decision, I’ve realized that the decision isn't just about whether I work or stay home.
It’s about how our entire family dynamic could change.
For so long, my husband and I have both had demanding careers. And without really meaning to, we’ve sometimes found ourselves competing for the one resource neither of us can create more of:
time.
Whose 8 a.m. call is more important?
Who can get the kids ready?
Who can miss the meeting?
Who has the deadline that absolutely cannot move?
It isn't that either person's work is more important.
It’s that there are only so many hours in the day, and sometimes both of us need the same one.
And I wonder what it would feel like to remove some of that tension from our home.
To not constantly have to negotiate who can take something on.
To not feel like we're both trying to protect our careers while also trying to give our kids what they need.
To have more room to support each other instead of constantly trying to figure out how we're going to make everything fit.
I think that's one of the things that excites me most.
I could become my husband's biggest champion.
Not because his career matters more than mine, but because I would have the capacity to help create space for him to navigate the complexities of his job. To be there when things get demanding. To help carry some of the mental load at home so he has room to focus when he needs it.
To cheer him on.
To genuinely want to see him succeed because his success is part of our family's success.
And then I wonder something bigger:
Could this actually create more space for our marriage?
More space for us to be husband and wife instead of constantly being two people trying to coordinate two careers, two kids, a household, and everything else life throws at us?
Could removing the competition for time give us more room for connection?
More room for each other?
More room for the relationship that existed before we became so consumed with managing everything?
Maybe there is an opportunity here to not just change how our household operates, but to change how we experience each other within it.
And there’s something really beautiful about that possibility.
But maybe that's the part I haven't fully processed yet.
Because creating more room for our marriage and our family also means taking on more responsibility for the household.
And strangely, that almost scares me more than my corporate job.
At work, I can make a mistake for a Fortune 500 company. I care deeply about what I do, but my mistake doesn't steer the entire company.
At home, the stakes feel completely different.
This is my family.
If I make the wrong decision, miss something, or don't manage something well, the impact feels much more personal.
So while I’m excited by the possibility of more time with my kids, less tension around our schedules, and more space for my husband and me to actually be husband and wife, I also know this isn't simply stepping away from something.
It’s stepping into something.
A different kind of responsibility.
A different kind of partnership.
A different definition of success.
And I don't know exactly what that will feel like yet.
But maybe that's okay.
Maybe this next chapter isn't about becoming someone different.
Maybe it's about figuring out how to be Still Me while making room for a different version of our life.
